Soaring Sites and Organizations In The Chicago Area

All of the sites listed below welcome visitors. You can fly or drive to a site to start enjoying the sport of soaring.


CLGC Logo The Chicagoland Glider Council was created in 1937 to promote and support the sport of Soaring in the greater Chicago, IL area. The CLGC is an umbrella organization that unites all of the glider clubs and commercial operations in the greater Chicago Area.

 


GCG Logo The address of the Chicago Glider Club is 26045 W. Airport Rd., Minooka, IL 60447, Clubhouse Phone: (815) 467-9861. The Chicago Glider Club's own gliderport is located on Bell Road, about 2 miles south east of Minooka, IL. This is about 4 miles south west of the intersection of I-80 and I-55. Most activity occurs on weekends during the summer. Activity during the week depends on member interest. The sailplanes available are: ASK-21, Blanik L-23, Pegasus, and Duo Discus. Aerotow is provided by a 180 HP Christen Husky and a 235 HP Piper Pawnee. Membership requires an initation fee, monthly dues and membership in the SSA. Membership is required for equipment usage. Windy City Soaring Association (WCSA)has glider rides available for the general public. They can be reached at (815) 286-7200. WCSA is a non-profit organization (club) dedicated to the promotion and enjoyment of soaring. They are based at Hinckley Airport (0C2) in the friendly village of Hinckley IL, situated about fifty miles west of downtown Chicago. They own and operate two Pawnee tow planes and several beautiful two-place and single-place gliders. Visitors to their airfield and to their web site at www.windycitysoaring.org are always welcome.

Sylvania Soaring Adventures 2624 S. Sylvania Ave. Sturtevant, WI 53177 (414) 886-4975; Sylvania Airport just off the frontage road at Hwy 11 and I-94, 20 miles South of Milwaukee. Weekends Mid April-Nov., weekdays after 5PM April- Nov. by appointment. 2-33A, Lark IS28-B2, 1-26E, aero-tow (Pawnee). Instruction, rides, rental.


Contests

The ChicagoLand Glider Council will sponsor the 2001 Region 7 Contest this June 3-9 2001 at the Joliet Park District Airport in Joliet IL.
