The ChicagoLand Glider council was created in 1937 to promote and support the sport of Soaring in the Chicago metropolitan area. Read the original incorporation papers.
In addition to the long history of the CLGC, the sport of soaring and the art of flying in the Chicago area has been around for even longer. In fact Chicago has been a hub of the Aviation industry for the past 100 years.
On Monday June 29, 1896 the Chicago Record ran an article describing the experiments being performed by Octave Chanute at Miller Beach, Gary Indiana. These flights were performed on the dunes along the shore of Lake Michigan.
On Wednesday September 8, 1897 the Chicago Times-Herald ran an article describing the experiences a young reporter had flying a glider. This may be the first recording of a flight by a novice.
On Sunday, September 12, 1897 the Chicago Times-Herald ran an article describing the continuing experiments being performed by Octave Chanute and A. M. Herring to solve the problems of maned flight.
